Planning your trip – Step 1

Picking the best time of year/ season/ setting your dates

Obviously the first step of planning any holiday is picking out your time of year and your dates. This goes a little deeper when your planning a Walt Disney World holiday as there are so many seasonal offerings and festivals this can potentially have a major sway on when you decide to go.

The two main seasonal events that happen are the Halloween and Christmas late night parties in the Magic Kingdom Park, and then the different Festivals which occur in Epcot – Festival of the Arts, Flower and Garden Festival and the Food and Wine Festival.

Obviously weather can have an impact on your holiday- particularly in Orlando due to their hurricane season which usually runs June through November with a peak in around September. If you do not want to be on hurricane watch before you – avoid September. The temperatures are usually high most of the year and can reach up to 33-35 degrees Celsius. However if you go in winter the evenings can get quite chilly down to about 13 degrees Celsius – I did throw a thin jumper on in the November I was there.

The amount of time you go comes down to a balance of how much time you wish to spend there versus the costs – this can also depend on how much you there and where you stay as well (which I’ll go into next time). Personally I couldn’t think of doing any less than two weeks, mostly due to the distance and also how much there is to do once your there.

Once you’ve decided if you would like to visit for a particular seasonal event, festival or whether you are bound by school holidays for example – narrow down to specific dates or a range of dates you are happy to travel within. From there I check projected crowd calendars by a Disney blogger- Kenny the Pirate. These are invaluable as you can see when the crowds are projected to be higher or lower based on trends and also US holidays we may not be aware of in the UK – for example Jersey week, Spring Break etc

Personally I like to go in the autumn/ winter as I’m not a fan of really hot temperatures, but its still hot enough to feel I’m on holiday. I am also not bound by school holidays, and I love to visit for the Halloween and Christmas seasons and it coincides with the Food and Wine festival. Obviously this is personal choice, and I do have blogs planned covering the festivals and the two seasonal events which can help you decide if its for you or not.

After you have pin pointed when you would like to go, the next choice is where to stay- blog coming soon
