Roseau is the capital of the Caribbean island nation of Dominica – and our next stop on the cruise!
It’s on the southwest coast and known for its 18th-century Creole architecture, its cobblestone Old Market, formerly a slave auction site, sells crafts and fruit.

We decided we’d just get up as we wanted, headed for another buffet breakfast as we were enjoying these each morning, and then off the ship and into the port. We didn’t have an excursion booked here and we had decided to just have a mooch, and do our own thing. As we got off the ship we could hear traditional steel drums, welcoming us and the street market set up along the sea front.
The actual port was very small, but very pretty with local art works on the floors and around the stands. When we reached the Main Street along the coast we decided to just wander and see what we could find, the markets were full of local arts and crafts but unfortunately we found a lot of people hounding you for taxi rides, trips and tours and other offerings like hair braiding – a lot more so than any other island.

In all honesty we didn’t spend a lot of time off ship due to this, which was a shame as it could have been a beautiful island to see, however we have said we’d go back and book an excursion as it seemed a lot of the beauty spots were further in land in the rainforests the island is famous for! We did stop again in the port for some WiFi where we were able to sign on for an hour to catch up with home – we tried to do this in each port stop for an hour or so if we were able to.

Once we were back on board we headed back to cabin, grabbed our towels and books and went to grab a spot in the Glass House for the afternoon. We had lunch here again – it was quickly our favourite spot- and relaxed reading our books with some cocktails and having a little dip in the whirl pools.

For the evening we did the main dining room again Gallery 47, which as usual was amazing food and service! We then found our usual spot in the Live Room for the bands and vocalists, staying right through to the end.
Overall we didn’t mind the island of Dominica, however as mentioned above we found we were hounded a lot more here for tours and taxis and people trying to sell you things. It is their income and tourists do bring a lot of trade and money to the islands, and it wasn’t just here that we were asked – however once we said no everywhere else it was accepted and we were left to our own devices.

Having said that, we wouldn’t not go back. As we already had some trips booked that we wanted to do more, we still have things we can do if we do go back, and we would book a TUI arranged trip here to try and see more of the beauty of the island.
Next stop we’re at Bequia in the Grenadines – follow along to see our adventures to Princess Margaret beach
Xoxo
